About Classes

Students will incorporate professional methods to learn songs quickly and efficiently; including arrangement analysis, improvisation concepts, and ear training skills. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about song forms, different musical styles, the other instruments of the band and how everyone plays their part in contributing to a group sound. Rock Camp is the perfect opportunity for all musicians – vocalists, guitarists, pianists, bassists, drummers, saxophonists, violinists, brass players, percussionists, etc. – to meet other musicians in the area and expand the network of the music community.

State College Rock Camp has coached numerous bands in writing original music, recording in the studio, performing live and selling their music online. Check out some of the music written by students from previous years camps.

“My son has participated in rock camp for 4 years. The talent that Matt and Jeff are able to get out of the kids in such a short amount of time is amazing!!! The rock camp has been the highlight of his summer for the last 4 years, plus he has also made long lasting friends. This year my daughter participated in rock camp to perform with her brother. Now she tells me she will be doing it for the next 4 years also!!!

A Brief History

Matt Price & Jeff Gibble started State College Rock Camp in the summer of 2010 when they saw a need for their private students to expand into a group-playing environment. After the success of these initial summer rock camps, they started planning winter rock camp that were held during the winter holiday break of that same year. The following summer, they expanded the camp to every week of summer vacation and offered a variety of levels from beginner to advanced. Now in their eighth year, Jeff and Matt have grown rock camp into a year-round, multi-option, multi-level program that includes public performances, audio recording, and classes that focus on songwriting. We look forward to seeing and hearing all of you grow as musicians in the years to come.

  • Students range in age from 6 – 18.

  • If you are a young musician and have no experience playing with other people then the beginner camp is recommended. Private performance is for younger to intermediate musicians with little or no group experience. The public performance camps are intended for students who have some previous experience playing with other musicians and want to perform in a public setting. The songwriting/recording camp is recommended for young musicians interested in learning about writing music, recording in a studio and performing their original music live.

  • Students interested in rock camp should have some experience playing their instrument. The camps are not designed for students who have never played an instrument before. We recommend that you sign up for private lessons with one of us. Call 814-861-6882 for more info on private lessons at Robert M. Sides.

  • Classes can be as small as 3 students to as large as 8.

  • All instruments are encouraged to join Rock Camp. Guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, vocals, horns, and orchestral instruments are all welcome.

  • To allow everyone fair chance to play we limit the amount of instruments to the following:

    • Two drummers. They will switch off between drumset and electronic percussion (Roland Octapad)
    • Four guitars
    • Two bass guitars
    • Two keyboard/piano
    • Two Vocalists

Class size is limited to 8 students and typically the only instrument that we have multiple students signed up for is drums and guitar. Multi-Instrumentalists are encouraged to play multi instruments.

  • You can sign up as late as the starting day of class as long there is room in the camp.

  • Rock Camp is a tuition based program. Therefore there are no discounts or refunds for missed classes.

  • Depending on when you sign up you may find out at the time of payment or it may take longer. It depends on how many people are interested in a particular week. We schedule based on a first come first serve bases but age and experience also play an important factor in which week you get. We try to put students of similar age and experience levels into the same classes.

  • You can pay by cash or a check written out to either Matt Price or Jeff Gibble.
