Methods That Work

Drumming for Vitality is interactive, that means that everyone gets to participate and benefit from the music making process.

During our interactive session residents experience music through four modalities:

  • Playing Music: call and response, music creation, free form, playing with their favorite songs
  • Movement: range of motion, moving with rhythm, mind/body connections
  • Singing: traditional songs, big band, rock and roll and more…
  • Listening: relaxing meditation sound and breathing awareness

  • Creativity stimulates right brain activity.
  • Reacting to the changing music creates an in the moment experience that helps everyone stay focused and present.

  • Creating music to a shared pulse is a collaborative effort. Everyone is contributing and providing something unique.
  • Singing and playing music in a group is highly engaging and activates many parts of the brain.
  • Music helps reduce stress levels in participants thus making them more open to share memories and emotions.

Feeling The Music

  • Drumming creates vibration that can be felt so even participants with hearing and visual impairments can be involved.

Benefits That Science Reveals

√  Building Resilience to Dementia and Alzheimers

√  Improves Short and Long Term Memory Recall

√  Stimulates Blood Flow Through Rhythmic Movement

√  Encourages Communication and Social Interaction

In a randomized controlled pilot study it was found that group music with rhythmic exercises may help cognitive function and mental health.

As a non-invasive and non-pharmacological alternative music addresses a number of psychological symptoms among older adults.

This study found that when using music that the residents grew up with it appeared to be more effective to improve their cognitive function and mental health.

“I just wanted to express my appreciation for the magic you created on the memory floor this afternoon.
I come to visit my sister and take her for a walk every day so I know that the residents are usually sitting around sleeping or staring into space or slowly wandering around. I have never seen more residents participating in an activity and I have never seen so much enthusiasm or so many smiles. You brought true joy into lives that have so little.  You have a gift for what you do and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the happiness and movement you gave my sister and the others.”
Sincerely
Barbara R

“Everyone was talking about the drum circle yesterday and this morning a few staff were still commenting on how it was a great time. It was amazing to see so many of our residents participating.  It really was great fun!I think it’s great that you are up for trying new things.  I love the movement with the boom whackers with the left ,, center,, right…. Your solo was great and it allowed for a little rest and the closing was great with the surf of the ocean.  Everyone enjoys following your rhythm and it is a good challenge (even for me)-lots of good things for sure!”

Dana Gregg | Therapeutic Recreation Director | The Village at Penn State

“The residents have been so complimentary of the drumming program from yesterday. One of the newer residents who attended for the first time said it made her feel better than any medicine!”
